What Is an Eternity Ring?

An eternity ring, also known as an infinity ring, features a continuous line of precisely cut gemstones like diamonds. They’re set around a band of precious metals like gold, white gold, or platinum. The circle represents eternity while the precious stones represent a promise of commitment and love.

It’s a popular piece of jewelry that’s used to mark important milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, and the birth of a child.

Eternity Rings: What Do They Mean?

Diamonds or gemstones in eternity rings are set in a circle—a figure with no beginning or end. This makes it the perfect symbol of everlasting love and commitment. It is thus typically given to a beloved after you’ve been together for a significant amount of time (like on your 25th or 50th wedding anniversary).

Plus, you can pass your ring down to future generations as a family heirloom to commemorate and symbolize your lasting love.

Eternity rings are also said to represent the circle of life. This is evident from its design, which is similar to ouroboros—a symbol that shows a snake devouring its own tail, signifying the endless cycle of birth and death.

The Origins of the Eternity Ring: A Peek Into History

Eternity rings have been around since 2000 to 1800 BC. They’re believed to have been inspired by the ancient Egyptians who saw the circle as a powerful symbol representing eternity. They exchanged rings made of simple metals, carved bones, beads, and beaded reeds as a token of eternal love and life. Since they also believed that the bond of marriage could transcend death, the eternity ring was a fitting gift.

Modern eternity rings were a result of an agreement between the Soviets who produced a surfeit of small uncut diamonds (under half a carat) that couldn’t be used in engagement rings due to their size.

Together with leading diamond company De Beers, they devised a strategy for increasing small diamond sales, giving birth to the eternity ring which they then marketed as a symbol of recaptured love.

The results? They increased the demand for small diamonds, were able to move them out of inventory, and the wives were happy!

How To Select the Right Ring for Your Significant Other

Looking for the perfect anniversary or valentines gift? Here’s a buying guide that can help:

Diamonds or Colored Gemstones?

Rare and eternally beautiful, diamonds are the ultimate expression of love but they’re not your only option. Suppose you want the eternity ring to say more than “I love you.” In that case, you can give the jewelry another layer of symbolism by using other gemstones.

For example, you can select the gemstone of your wife’s birth month or have them inserted according to the number of years you’ve been together.

Band Material

Eternity rings are made of precious metals like white gold, yellow gold, and platinum. Each has its own properties: yellow gold is a classic and timeless material,  white gold is durable enough for everyday wear, and platinum is hypoallergenic. Hence, you can decide on the material based on your needs and preferences.

Ideally, you want to get something that matches the metal of your partner’s engagement and wedding rings. So, any wear or tear over time will look uniform when worn.

Setting

Eternity rings are set in a variety of ways, each delivering a different aesthetic. The most commonly used diamond settings include:

  • Channel setting - where a row of diamonds is set between metals on each side as it’s embedded in the base of the band. Offering a superior fit and aesthetic, it’s the preferred style for those with an active lifestyle.
  • Claw setting - features tiny diamonds attached with little prongs that are slightly bent over to secure them in place. This is the preferred choice for many as it allows more light to pass through the stones, resulting in an even greater luster.
  • Pavé setting - small diamonds are set close together along the shank of the ring, typically with a large gemstone in the middle. It looks like a paved road, which makes sense since pave literally means “pavement” in French.

There are many other settings to choose from other than these three but these are the most popular.

Consider Variants

This luxurious ring is available in two variants: full-set and half-set.

In full-set eternity rings, diamonds are set in a continuous line around the band. This gives it a sparkly effect while supporting the symbolism of continuous love and affection. But bear in mind that precious gemstones sit on the underside of the finger, so it will feel a tad heavier and may be more susceptible to wear and tear.

Half-set eternity rings, on the other hand, have precious stones at the visible (top) part of the shank while their undersides remain unadorned. As a result, they are more durable and affordable than a full set. You can even get one resized to match the wearer’s finger size. This makes it the go-to choice for those who value practicality.

Whether you go for a full- or half-set, Artizan Joyeria offers stainless steel eternity rings with cubic zirconia that are available in a range of sizes. We also have a size chart to help you determine the ring size you need.

How Do You Wear an Eternity Ring?

Most choose to wear it on the ring finger, between (or on top of) the wedding and engagement bands, while others choose to swap their wedding bands in favor of the eternity ring. Some move it to the third finger. If you feel like three rings are too much, another option is to wear the eternity ring on the same finger but on the other hand.

After all is said and done, there are no hard and fast rules. You can wear it on whichever finger or hand you want.
